Carnivorous Venus Fly Trap Plant Dionaea Muscipula

By admin

Nature provides this remarkable plant with “traps” to lure and capture it’s food. The traps are covered inside by tiny hairs and a sticky sweet smelling substance attractive to insects. When an insect touches the trigger hair, the trap is activated and closes around it’s victim. After digestion of it’s meal (whick takes several days), the trap will open again for a new catch. PLANTING AND CARE: Keep moist at all times, rainwater or distilled water are preferred. Plants should not be fertilized (so therefore should be separated from your other plants). The insects it catches provide natural nourishment. Select a sunny window for your Venus Flytrap. In replanting only use sphagnum! Peat moss will do in a pinch. Put a plastic saucer underneath the plant to hold water and keep it’s humidity proper but do not stand in a dish of water.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars They were Fine!?!
Got the Venus Flytrap in the mail and it looked pitiful. But I watered it only with Distilled water and after about a month it started to bud more traps. It was looking back for a while there… But they eventually worked out. Hang tough… Good plant.

1 Star Poor shipping methods kill plants.
Ordered $50 worth of carnivorous plants for my son for Christmas. All came falling out of their pots in a Priority box, NOT even marked “this end up”. All plants were dead within 2 weeks including this one. Hirt’s should have a better method for shipping. No help available through customer support, just out $50! The Venus Fly Trap had its traps closed on itself upon arrival. It was “eating” itself due to the abuse of shipping.

5 Stars Must research!!!
This plant is excellent! Its in tip-top condition, and it’s already been a week. When I got one a year ago, it died after I changed it into regualar soil, and watered it with tap water. I researched the venus flytrap before I bought this product, and it has helped me a lot. I still keep it in the same pot, outside on top of my window sill, and it ate 2 flies by itself ever since I got it, which I didn’t expect. I water it with distilled water from the supermarket, and sometimes I leave it in the rain outside. The traps have really good red coloration, and are a about 2 1/2 cm. When I first got it, it had 4 healthy traps, and a few more dying traps. Now, it has 7 healthy traps. I like it so much!!

1 Star Look elsewhere!
Hirts is THE WORST supplier of plants I have EVER bought from!

These plants require winter dormancy and so do many pitcher plants from November - February. Hirts does not know how to properly grow these plants! Look elsewhere for quality, I suggest www.cobraplant.com for very competitive prices and EXTREME QUALITY!

5 Stars Always wanted one!
Got one for my daughter after she read about them in a science work book. Arrived with 4 traps and is doing fine even after sitting on my desk for 3 days before opening (I was traveling when it arrived). It is well packaged and if you follow the directions carefully, will have a most interesting plant! Very educational, makes plants alot more interesting than just counting tree rings or comparing cones.
